Why did Eisenhower intervene in the Little Rock controversy?

Ultimately, Eisenhower intervened in Little Rock due to concerns for public safety.  He wanted to uphold the Constitution and the laws, but also avoid a possible bloody confrontation in Arkansas, where emotions ran rather high. He decided to send in the military in order to restore order and to allow the African-American students to enroll in school.
