The policy was known as Repartimiento
it was based on the previous Encomienda policy, only that it sought to exclude people of mixed blood from the several weeks of forced labor. In addition, it was crown managed, to ensure that it was not abused by the two groups before it. In general however, it diluted native Indian ethnicity as many of them engaged in intermarriages to escape from forced labor.
