Two different ways of solving the expression 20 = 5(-3 + x) are given below :

To solve the expression : 20 = 5(−3 + x)

METHOD 1  :

20 = 5(−3 + X)

Expand by opening the bracket

20 = - 15 + 5x

Collect like terms

20 + 15 = 5x

35 = 5x

Isolate x by dividing through by 5

35/5 = 5x/5

x = 35 /5

x = 7

METHOD 2:

20 = 5(−3 + x)

Divide both sides by 5

20/5 = 5(−3 + x) / 5

4 = - 3 + x

Collect like terms

4 + 3 = x

x = 7

Using any of the two solution steps gives the same final answer.
