The policies of salutary neglect involved the British not imposing their rules and laws on the American colonies — they effectively left the Americans to self-govern for an extended period of time. This gave the result of the Americans knowing what independence was like, and the end of salutary neglect and implementation of a range of other laws were a major factor in causing the American Revolution.
