A 48.0-g piece of metal is dropped into 50.0 mL of water in a graduated cylinder. The water level rises to 62.4 mL. What is the density of the metal?

calculation of the volume displaced in the cylinder:

Volume final - Volume initial

62.4 mL - 50.0 mL = 12.4 mL

Mass of metal = 48.0 g

Therefore:

D  = m / V

D = 48.0 / 12.4

D = 3.87 g/mL
