The high demand for slaves during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was fueled by the high profit made by Spanish plantation owners who grew and processed sugar cane. The main products obtained from sugar cane were rum and sugar, both highly sought-after goods of consumption at that time. The demand of slaves also grew as the Spanish had wiped out most of the Native Americans as a result of the diseases they brought into America which Native Americans had no effective immune defense for.
