the French fought on the side of the Americans during the American Revolution.

After the Battle of Saratoga, American colonists proved to Europe that they were willing to fight. They just lacked the necessary tools and the arsenal to do so. So European countries like France and Spain decided to lend their help. It was only through the help of the French at the Battle of Yorktown that the battle, and therefore the war, was won.
