In 1858 what event significantly changed life on Vancouver Island

On the 2nd of August 1858, British Columbia (which did not ye tinclude the Vancouver island) was converted into a British Crown colony. Vancouver later was merged with this colony, - so that's one significant event.

Another significant event of 1858 was the Vancouver Island (and British Columbia gold rush of 1858).
