how does the amount of resistors affect the current in a series circuit

The current in a series circuit decreases as the TOTAL RESISTANCE increases. Resistors come in many values, so the total resistance has nothing to do with the number of resistors. There could easily be one single resistor with greater resistance than 500 resistors with smaller values.
