I can't give you a reference, but if you are talking about WWII then the Russians would have very definite opinions. The 2 greatest battles and the horrible siege of Leningrad (which lasted nearly 900 days) were all fought on Russian Soil. Nobody suffered on both sides as much as the Russians and the Germans in those three events.
