I think the simplest unit of a nucleic acid is a nucleotide. It is an organic molecule that serve as the monomer of nucleic acid such as DNA and RNA. It is referred to as the building block of nucleic acid and is composed of a nitrogenous base, a five carbon sugar and at least one phosphate group.
