Multiply (length) times (width). For a square, both numbers will be the same.

Area of a Square - side times side. since each side of a square is the same, it can simply be the length of one side squared.

formula is:

A=S^2  or  A=S*S     *=times

Area of Rectangle - multiply the length times the width the

 formula is:

 A= L*W  *= times
