Nitrogen-fixing bacteria contain an enzyme complex called nitrogenase which catalyses the conversion of nitrogen gas to ammonia. It supplies hydrogen ions as well as energy from ATP. The nitrogenase complex is sensitive to oxygen, becoming inactivated when exposed to it
