The primary factor was Islamic expansion into formerly Catholic or Eastern orthodox lands. There was constant war between Europeans., in which they instituted grassroots movements called the "Peace of God"  and the "Truce of God" henceforth restricting warfare in Europe. This caused many knights to go to Spain in order to fulfill their knightly roles (due to fighting the Muslims).
