An adaptation is a characteristic which an organism has that enables its survival. For example, fish have gills to breathe underwater. This means they can respire and produce energy to move around.

Different birds have different shapes of beaks because they eat different things. Some have sharp, pointed beaks so they can find insects and worms easily in soil. Some have very long beaks so they can put them into flowers and reach the nectar easily.
