Hyphens are used to join compound words while dashes separate words. Dashes are longer than hyphens. These punctuation marks have been used in these sentences;
- 1. My ex-husband was a marine.
- 2. She asked for a favor —a big favor.
- 3. Jennie had hoped —but it was not to be.
- 4. They were twenty-third and twenty-fourth in line.
- 5. Those girls —both stunningly beautiful are in my homeroom.
- 6. Henry arrived late —as usual.
- 7. Well look who’s here —it’s you’ll never see me again Charlie.
- 8. I couldn’t believe what she had done —it was a masterpiece. DIRECTIONS: Rewrite each sentence below, using a dash.

- 14. “On the contrary—” Liam began, but no one wanted to hear it.
The dash can work as ending punctuation; there is no period after a dash, and there are no spaces around a dash. Rewrite each sentence below, using a dash.
- 15. “But if I’m not there—,” George said. Â
- 16. “Joe promised—” Amy cried, when her friends told her the bad news.
- 17. Kim was saying, “That’s the last we’ll see of—” when Kevin reappeared.
- 18. “In that case—” Fiona was saying, when her boss interrupted.
- 19. “Yesterday at lunch, Rachel—” my friend started to say, but I kicked her under the table.
- 20. “I don’t think so, unless—" but she didn’t finish her sentence. We both knew it was impossible.
As shown above, the dashes are used to separate ideas while the hyphen combines compound words. The dash can also be used when there is an interruption in a person's speech.
