you want to make the fractions have the same denominator.
2/3 = 8/12
1/4 = 3/12
now subtract the numerator and keep the denominator the same...
8/12 - 3/12 = 5/12
5 1/2 is the answer

First change the fractions to a common denominator of 12.
2/3= 8/12 1/4 = 3/12
Now you can subtract the fractions.
(8/12)-(3/12)=5/12
