The answer to the question asked  above is as follows:

1 dozen = 12 pieces
3 dozen = (12 pieces)(3) = 36 pieces
thus : 
If 3 dozen apples is $4.50 , each piece would be $4.50 / 36 pieces.

So $0.125 per piece of apple.
