on two bounces. How far did it go on the first
bounce?

Answer:

Think proportion and ratio.

The ball bounced twice and travelled 12ft.

The first bounce is twice the distance of the second bounce so the second bounce must be equal to two of the first.

2:1 of a total 12.

You now have three parts 12/3 =4

The first bounce is 2 times this amount which is 8 ft the second bounce was 4 ft as it was only one part.
