Since 1996, Atmel has created the AVR family of microcontrollers, which Microchip Technology purchased in 2016. As contrast to the one-time programmable ROM, EPROM, or EEPROM used by other microcontroller families at the time, AVR was one of the first to utilise on-chip flash memory for program storage.
