I think Prospero wanted Ferdinand to marry his daughter. Ferdinand was the only man that Miranda had ever met aside from Caliban and her father. Ferdinand and Miranda had become fast friends and thus eventually fall on love. Although Prospero had immediately liked Ferdinand, he wanted to test what kind of man Ferdinand is. Ferdinand and Miranda got married at the end of the play.
