Thermal energy is defined as the kinetic energy present within the particles of a substance.

So, when thermal energy of a substance increases then kinetic energy of particles further increases. As a result, more number of collisions take place within the particles due to which bond between them breaks.

Hence, state of matter or substance changes with increase in thermal energy.

For example, when ice melts then solid state changes into liquid state.
