Well into the twentieth century, many scientists believed the ocean floor was 

that the floor of the ocean floor is flat. But later on discovered that their theory is wrong.

It was believed that the ocean floor was flat well into the twentieth century. It wasn't until the discovery of the mid ocean ridge, that scientists realized, the ocean was flat.
