The integral symbol looks like an elongated S, as in sum. Why do you suppose this?

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the Mathematician who first introduced the symbol for integral, [tex] \int[/tex], thought that the symbol is to represent integral as an infinite sum. This symbol was adapted from the letter 's'.
