The basic unit of an element that can enter into chemical combination is the atom.

When atoms combine with other atoms they produce new substances (compounds) in a process called chemical change.

In a chemical change the atoms of an element do not change (they follow being the same kind of atoms) what change is their combination with the atoms of other elements.
