Plugging -1 in for 1, we get (-1)^3+6(-1)^2+12*(-1)+8. For (-1)^3, since 3 is odd and -1 is negative, we end up with -1. For (-1)^2, since 2 is even, we end up with 1. For -1, we have -1, so we have (-1)+6*1+12*(-1)+8=-1+6-12+8=15-12=3
