Proteins that are located on the surface of the plasma membrane of a cell and function to move substances in and out of the cell are called "transport proteins". These proteins can aid the transport of substances across the membrane by either facilitated diffusion (diffusion according to a concentration gradient; these are typically referred to as "channels") or active transport (against a gradient and requiring energy to carry out; often referred to as "carriers").
