It all depends on the equation, each has a different relationship between variables. Some common uses of K include:
-Indirect Proportion: y=x+1/k
-Direct Proportion: y=x+k
-Direct Square Proportion: y=x+k^2
-Indirect Square Proportion: y=x+1/k^2

Hope this helps!
