Anne likes puffy sleeves with lots of frills because every girl at school is wearing them. But Marilla thinks its just nonsense and a waste of good fabric. When Anne laments that she didn't make any dresses with puffed sleeves, Marilla remarks, "Well, you'll have to do without your thrill. I hadn't any material to waste on puffed sleeves. I think they are ridiculous-looking things anyhow".
