The correct answer here is mainly because they used the power of the federal government to open trade and dissolve corporate trusts. By doing that they would promote the competition in the market. Theodore Roosevelt is maybe the most well known "trusbuster" as he was instrumental in the fall of the large monopolies that came the dominate the American market.
