Ashoka was an Indian emperor and ruled the majority of the Indian subcontinent from c. 268 to 232 BCE. During his reign as emperor, Ashoka waged a war against the state of Kalinga. The brutality of this war resulted in his embracing Buddhism. Through his influence, Buddhism expanded throughout the Mauryan empire and other kingdoms, and worldwide from about 250 BCE
