In general, there is no reason to believe they are parallel.

If the figure is described as a square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, or any other quadrilateral with parallel sides, then they probably are. (Except AB and CD may be parallel in the trapezoid, so the answer there is "maybe.")
