area of square = a^2 = 4^2 = 4 x 4 = 16

the sides of a square are all equal which means that all the sides are 4. there are 4 sides on a square and the length is 4. to find the area, we multiply 4 x 4. 4 x 4=16 sq ft. this means that 16 sq ft is the area of the square
