Draw a number line.  Locate the origin and x = -2.  Beginning at x = -2, move 3 units to the right.  You'll end up at x = 1.  Next, beginning at x = -2, move 3 units to the left.  You'll end up at x = -5.  

The solution set consists of all real numbers greater than 1 or less than -5.

(-infinity, -5) OR (1, +infinity)
